Patio Umbrella Parts

Here are some of the parts you may need.

Cranks
Cranks are part of a cantilever umbrella.  It’s the part you put your hand on and turn to manipulate the umbrella ange.

Finials
The top or fabric part of the umbrella is said to be the finial.  Finials are usually architecture centerpieces and so the word fits here.

Ribs
The ribs are the metal (most often) or wood parts that give the fabric the umbrella shape.  If you look under the fabric, you will see metal or wood rods that hold the fabric up.  These are the ribs.  The ribs are attached to the pole and also to the fabric.  The two together pivot to open and close the umbrella.

Ribs are most often made out of aluminum, but are also made out of steel or wood, as well.  Aluminum’s light weight and strength make it an ideal rib material.  Occasionally, the ribs may also be made of fiberglass.

Poles
Of course we know what the pole is.  The pole is usually not the problem.  If, however, the pole breaks you can put it back together with an umbrella pole clamp.

Frames
Frames refer to the finial, ribs and pole together.

Covers
Umbrella covers are needed to keep your umbrella safe and clean.

Bases
The umbrella base is made of brass, steel, or plastic.  Beach umbrellas often use a sand auger base. The umbrella base will usually weigh around 70 lbs.
