Patio Umbrella Repair

The day may come that your seasoned patio umbrella needs some minor repairs.  To start out with, we should prevent as many repairs as possible.

Prevention

In winter months, store the umbrella in the garage and in a carrying case.  Especially wet, cold, and windy winters can wreak havoc on an umbrella.  The other factor is to store it dry and clean.

Patio umbrellas will need to be cleaned off occasionally.  Just hose them down with soap and water.  This is a good way to keep the colors bright.  You will not get that dingy look of some older umbrellas.

Repair

Umbrellas can fail for a number of reasons.  A common problem is that the stringing fails.  In this case, you will need to restring the umbrella.

Here’s how.  Separate the pole at the pivot by driving the pin holding them together.  Once they are apart it gets easier.

Check carefully.  If you can get the umbrella apart with taking out the pin, do it.  It all depends on the kind and style of umbrella you have.  Make sure the replacement string isn’t too large to fit through the holes.

You may consider buying a hose clamp at the store.  In this way, you can raise the umbrella and easily install the hose clamp in a couple of minutes.  This is probably the quickest and easiest fix.

If you don’t want to string it yourself, you can send it in to http://www.agoodstrapping.com/umbrella.html to get it restrung.
