Who Invented the UmbrellaThree hundred years BC is how old the umbrella is. Its roots have been traced back to ancient Egypt. The original design was made of paper and then waxed to help keep it waterproof. Nobody really knows who invented the umbrella because its roots are so ancient. For centuries, the umbrella was only used by women. They were rare to be seen or used. It wasn’t until the eighteenth century that umbrellas started to gain in popularity. Samuel Fox invented the steel ribbed umbrella in 1852. William Carter invented the outdoor umbrella stand in 1888. The first all umbrella shop was called James Smith and Sons. The shop opened in 1830 and is still located in London, England (source: eat-online.net).
